Cycle commuting while training?
Cycle commuting while doing the 100 day plan :
"I have read some other answers about fitting occasional cross-training or sports training sessions around the marathon plan.
However I currently cycle to and from work 6 or 7 days a week. This is approximately 30min each way of medium intensity riding, sometimes higher intensity depending on how late I am...
Is it worthwhile attempting to follow the marathon training schedule while doing this, or would you recommend finding alternative transport to work for a few months?
I certainly don't feel like going for a run after I get home most days.
John"
Answer: Hi John and thanks for the question.
That is a tricky one. It is better to do those rides instead of not training at all, however, IDEALLY - in the weeks leading up to the marathon you want to limit the bike riding you do to get as much running specific work as possible.
A middle ground would probably be to cut down on (maybe half) of the cycling about 5-8 weeks before the marathon and "push" yourself out on the runs, even though you are tired after work.
It will only be for a few weeks but it will likely pay off on your marathon finishing time!
I wish you all the best,
kind regards, Marius
